Underneath, there is a protective coating that keeps harmful road grim at bay. Both need to be carefully preserved. To help drivers maximize their time behind the wheel and less on car care, Chevrolet has created a summer car wash guide. Chevrolet top car care tips: Washing Remove loose dirt on the top of your car\'s paint surfaces by spraying water over the car. Don\'t wipe dust or dirt on your car when it is dry as this creates can scratch the paintwork. Never use kitchen washing up liquids as they contain detergents that remove the natural oils found in car waxes plus the outer clear coat of paint - accelerating oxidation.  Never wash your car after driving it or in direct sunlight as the heat dries the waxes and polishes too quickly which deteriorate and stop being effective. Start at the top by washing the roof and work down. Avoid washing your car on a gravel drive when using a high pressure water hose. Waxing Polishing your paintwork will remove paint defects and enhance surface gloss, leaving your vehicles bodywork ready to be protected. To see if your car needs waxing, after a wash run your finger or a soft dry cloth over the paint. If you hear a squeaking noise or your finger drags on the bodywork it needs waxing Waxes act as a barrier coat to preserve paintwork from harsh environments and UV rays to remove any contaminants and oxidation washing cannot remove. Spread a polymer-based polish onto a recycled dish cloth or microfiber cloth to wax you car and apply it to the bodywork in small areas in circular motions. Remove the polish in straight lines before treating the next section Wheel care Don\'t forget that when washing your car, if it is fitted with alloy wheels to also clean them as they require special care. Wash them thoroughly with the warm soapy water you used to clean the rest of the car or a water-based alloy wheel cleaner to remove any built-up dirt.
