After eight years as an account manager at the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, Mark Gabbertas was ready for a change. He set up his design studio in 1992 and from the beginning Gabbertas’ objective was “to produce innovative and elegant designs that owe nothing to the vagaries of fashion.” He intends each piece “to stand the test of time and retain its freshness through an understanding of proportion, materials and production techniques.” A stunning example of this ethos is his Angle Collection (2011), a geometric, modular system of lounge furniture for outdoors. Working with Gloster, one of the most recognized names in quality outdoor furniture, Gabbertas had access to the latest fabric and cushion technology for weather resistance. The frames are made of type 304 stainless steel (the same grade used on the stainless-clad Gateway Arch in St. Louis), and the LeisureTex™ water-resistant cushions are filled with reticulated foam with open pores for maximum water drainage, air circulation and drying speed. Under each seat cushion is a layer of Textilene®, a mesh fabric that’s ideal for applications requiring high tensile strength, mildew resistance and breathability. Exclusive to www.dwr.com, $5885USD.
