Quake hits off Solomon Islands

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no Pacific-wide tsunami warning issued for the tremor-prone region.

The shallow quake was centred some 186 kilometres (116 miles) southwest of Dadali and 214 kilometres from the capital Honiara.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, which also measured the quake at 6.9, said "a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected".
