Queen Elizabeth II became Britain's longest-serving monarch on Wednesday, overtaking her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria's stint of 63 years, seven months and two days.

The queen ascended to the throne on February 6, 1952 aged 25. She marked the record-breaking day in low-key style by inaugurating a new railway line in Scotland.
