EU budget commissioner Kristalina Georgieva

The European Commission on Wednesday proposed an additional 1.7 billion euros ($1.9 billion) in funds to help the bloc tackle the biggest refugee crisis to face the continent since World War II.

"We have taken a decision to propose an additional 1.7 billion euros," EU budget commissioner Kristalina Georgieva told reporters. "With this money we are more than doubling financing to deal with the refugee crisis."
