Barack Obama has been informed of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's death, the White House said Saturday, as the US president was golfing in Califorina.

"The president and first lady extend their deepest condolences to Justice Scalia's family," said White House deputy spokesman Eric Schultz, adding that further reaction would come later in the day.
