Burundi police arrested Wednesday a key opposition leader who had defied calls to end protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza's third term bid for "insurrection", an AFP journalist who witnessed the incident said.

Senior civil society leader Audifax Ndabitoreye, a dual Burundi and Dutch national who has played a major role in demonstrations, was arrested a day after an interview in which he called for further protests.
