Toronto - UPI

Actor John Malkovich helped save the life of an American who accidentally cut his throat in a fall outside a Toronto restaurant, the man's wife says. Malkovich, who is in the Canadian city performing in The Giacomo Variations at the Elgin Theatre, stepped in to apply pressure on Jim Walpole's throat after the Ohio man suffered a gash to his throat Thursday when he tripped and fell into some scaffolding after eating at P.J. O'Brien's restaurant, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. "The way he was spurting I thought it was the carotid [artery] or the jugular [vein]," said Walpole's wife Marilyn, a 79-year-old retired nurse. She shouted for help and that was Malkovich's cue. The actor, with help from P.J. O'Brien's owner Ben Quinn, stepped in and applied pressure to the cut, using his scarf to stem the flow of blood. "They were so helpful, so wonderful," Walpole told the CBC. Jim Walpole, 77, said his Good Samaritan "took over just like a doctor." An ambulance arrived soon after to take Walpole to a hospital. He was released after receiving 10 stitches to close his wound Walpole said Malkovich only identified himself as "John" and Quinn said Malkovich was nonchalant afterward. "Malkovich turned and thanked me. I thanked him. We couldn't shake hands, I was covered in blood," Quinn said. "He was just off, didn't want any attention. He's a gentleman and a compassionate person." Walpole said he wasn't a Malkovich fan, noting he wasn't even sure he'd ever even seen any of his movies. The 77-year-old said he didn't recognise Malkovich and wasn't really sure if he's ever seen him in any films. But his wife said that's going to change. "I'm going to watch all of them that I can," she said.
