UN Special Rapporteor on Human Rights of Migrants François Crepeau has expressed concern in connection with an offer by some Russian politicians to restrict access to the sphere of retail trade for migrant workers. These offers must be thoroughly looked into, he told Tass, saying any measures to restrict hiring of foreign workers must be discussed. He said this should be discussed within Russia and within the framework of an international dialogue. On Thursday, President Vladimir Putin called for working towards tougher requirements for migrants. He suggested that the government should think about selecting the kinds of activity where migrants could be replaced with local residents, such as trade. Chairwoman of the committee for security and combating corruption under the State Duma lower house of parliament Irina Yarovaya (United Russia faction) suggested returning zero quota for migrants in retail trade.
