As part of its commitment to providing world-class sustainable and integrated transportation infrastructure in line with its Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP), the Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced today that it has completed the first phase of traffic improvements on Abu Dhabi City entrances and exits, with an aim to ensure safe, smooth and problem-free vehicle flow to various areas inside the city. The First Phase of the traffic improvements included road expansion of the Sheikh Zayed Road for vehicles coming from Al Maqta Bridge heading towards Abu Dhabi City. Works undertaken included the increase of lanes from three to four and from two to three at some points, adjusting ground lines, adding traffic signals in addition to asphalt surface removal and placement of a new asphalt layer in order to boost the road capacity to withstand the expected increase of number of vehicles. DoT completed the project as part of the plan set by the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee in a record time of 120 hours of progressive work with no accidents, ensuring the challenges of the road network infrastructure and users are immediately addressed. The Committee consists of a number of partners including Department of Transport (DoT), Abu Dhabi Police, Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM), and Urban Planning Council (UPC). The project of widening Sheikh Zayed Road is in three phases, with the soon to start 2nd and 3rd phases encompassing widening the same road near by the Ministries Complex towards Al Maqta Bridge and at the entrance of Al Maqta Bridge from both sides in order to accommodate the growing number of vehicles whilst offering world-class safety standards for all users. The DoT has embarked on field studies and surveys on congested areas, including Sheikh Zayed Road, and designed solutions ensuring smoother and better vehicle flow, especially at peak time owing to a larger number of cars. Following the completion of phase one of the project, the DoT is monitoring vehicle movement to compare the new reality with previous status and to respond to any urgent issues which may occur.
