Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower on Tuesday, following overnight decline in Wall Street amid tumbling crude oil prices.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 292.30 points, or 1.70 percent, from Friday to 16,905.43. Financial markets were closed in Japan on Monday for a national holiday.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 21.70 points, or 1.57 percent, at 1,358. 88.
Major decliners included mining, insurance and automaker issues.
