Tokyo stocks open sharply lower after yearend rally

Tokyo shares opened sharply lower in the first trading day of 2014 on Monday, as investors tended to lock in gains following the market's surge late last year. At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 245. 25 points, or 1.51 percent, from Dec. 30, the final trading day of 2013, to 16,046.06. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lowered 8.03 points, or 0.62 percent, to 1, 294.26.
