Tokyo stocks edged down Monday, with the Nikkei index breaking a three-day winning streak, as investors grew cautious ahead of policy decisions from the Bank of Japan and the U.S. Federal Reserve.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 8.19 points, or 0.04 percent, from Friday at 19,246.06. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock, according to Japan's (Kyodo) News Agency.
Exchange finished 2.12 points, or 0.14 percent, lower at 1,558.21.
Major declining industry groups included oil and coal, mining and pharmaceuticals.
