Ministry of Interior and the European Union Delegation to Jordan, on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance partnership in the protection against extremism, increase dialogue on policies and boost cooperation to promote the values of peace and tolerance.

The deal was signed by Interior Minister Salamah Hammad and EU Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Matteo Fontana.

Hammad said the agreement will strengthen cooperation between Jordan and the EU in the fight against extremism and violence through adopting specific strategies to enhance cultural and religious dialogue to enable communities to better deal with violent extremism.

The deal he added, will also support communities and raise their awareness to prevent extremism and boost cultural, social and educational response to extremism.

The minister praised the advanced level of relations between Jordan and the EU in the political, economic and security fields, and called for further boosting cooperation in the interest of both sides.

The EU ambassador for his part, said the two sides will work together to raise preventive capabilities of both sides through adopting a comprehensive approach that includes strategic contacts, research, training and rehabilitation programs, noting that these are part of the EU’s efforts to combat extremism.

The MoU was signed within the continued cooperation between the EU and Jordan in areas related to respect of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law in addition to boosting efforts to fight extremism.

Under the deal, the EU will provide Jordan with technical support to combat extremism.
