Kuwait - KUNA

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry would not turn blind eye to any unwarranted and unauthorized increase in prices of basic commodities and is keen on developing the inspection teams' mechanisms and performance, and discussed possible means to tighten the grip of the ministry on the market to protect consumers. Addressing a ministry meeting, Minister Amani Buresli said the ministry is keen on resolving issues impeding satisfactory performance of inspection teams and departments of the ministry directly involved with protecting the rights and health of consumers. The cooperation of consumers themselves and precautionary measures such as monitoring and logging prices of goods ahead of seasons of greater demand than usual. These measures are particularly important ahead the month of Ramadan, ahead of Eid Al-Fitr, and at the start of the school year, she pointed out. The main areas of attention in the process of development should be upgrading technical standards and abilities, improving administrative coordination and performance, and bolstering cooperation with other state authorities, Buresli noted. The officials at the meeting also discussed and stressed the need to constantly review and tweak laws to fit the state of affairs and counter loop-holes in original regulations, with both a local and global focus. The meeting was attended by Acting Commerce Undersecretary Sheikh Meshal Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Supervision Affairs Tawfiq Al-Zayid, and the ministry's Commercial Supervision Department Director Ali Al-Hajri, alongside heads of inspection teams and divisions in all Kuwaiti governorates.
