After being away from her small business for several weeks, Ruth, a Quaker widow, identifies a body found by her stepson, Michael. Now, Ruth must find the real killer among a number of suspects – one, a miscreant from the previous mystery novel – and effect Michael's release from the notorious Newgate Prison.
