Tremor jolts northeastern Iran

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on Richter scale jolted Khosf and its vicinity in the eastern province of South Khorasan in Iran Monday morning.
The seismological base affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University said that the epicenter of the tremor was located in an area 32.2 degrees in latitude and 58.96 degrees in longitude, according to Iran's (IRNA) News Agency.
No report was immediately available on possible damage caused by the tremor.
Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
The worst in recent times hit Bam in Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.
