Jeddah - XINHUA

Saudi Arabia plans to build new dams north of Jeddah, to complement five dams and a few others under construction, in order to prevent disastrous floods during rainy season. Dr Zuhair Nawabm, chairman of the Saudi Geological Survey, told Al Hayat newspaper on Monday that after many floods were reported in 2009, the Geological Survey has suggested to build dams in the east, of which five locations were selected. "The Geological Survey is studying to have more in the northern side of the city," Nawabm said. The official highlighted that the study was reviewed by environmentalists to make sure it will not harm natural habitats in the proposed areas. In December 2009, heavy rains hit Jeddah and caused massive flooding, leaving more than 500 people killed.
