Kuwait - BNA

Kuwait is determined to keep building natural reserves and provide full support to any environmental initiative to safeguard biodiversity, Environment Public Authority (EPA) chief has said.
Kuwait is keen on implementing plans based on relevant legislations and laws with the objective of preserving biodiversity to achieve sustainable development, Shaikh Abdullah Al-Sabah, Board Chairman and Director General told a conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, in Cancun, Mexico, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

These endeavors, he was quoted as saying by an EPA statement issued in Kuwait Saturday, were upon instructions of His Highness the Amir Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
The Environment Law in Kuwait compels all relevant institutions to put into consideration environmental impact of their projects on fishing traps, animals feed, air quality projects and underground water drilling, he said.

Shaikh Abdullah explained that the environment law paved way for appointment of monitors on how projects or institutions were harming or preserving environment.
He said biodiversity has become an economic, social and human issue, and an integral part of sustainable development.

EPA, said Shaikh Abdullah, was updating the national biodiversity strategy to cope with the 2011-20 strategy of the conferences of parties, in order to preserve biodiversity in the world, KUNA reported.
