Jeddah - Arabstoday
Jeddah Municipality will supply 50,000 new dumpsters apart from replacing damaged dumpsters with new ones to ensure efficient cleaning operations in the city. The new dumpsters will be of 120 liters and 240 liters capacity and between two yards to six yards in length. They will be distributed in each district or street depending on its demands and the size of population in the area. A study on the cleaning needs of each district has also been made. The municipality has also appointed some agencies to supervise the operations of the new companies contracted to clean the city. The municipality is also seeking the cooperation of both citizen and expatriate residents to maintain a high degree of environmental cleanliness in the city. The municipality particularly called on the people not to throw waste to any place other than the dumpsters. It also wanted people to contact its operation room at telephone number 940 or on its website when they find garbage at any place other than dumpsters.City residents complained that some people are littering streets with garbage because there are no enough number of dumpsters currently available in the city streets. They want garbage boxes to be placed at convenient locations.Naif Al-Qarni, a Saudi resident in the city, said dumpsters placed in most residential districts should be big enough to contain the garbage produced in the locality or else people will start throwing them at other places. “The new cleaning contractor should also supply dumpsters in good condition and place them at convenient distance,” Al-Qarni said.Ahmed Al-Jedani, a resident of the Mushrifa district, hoped that the new company would distribute dumpsters at reasonable distances and would not place them right in front of residential buildings. “The municipality should not think that its responsibility is over after signing a cleaning contract with a new company replacing the old contractor,” Ali Muslim, another city resident said.He demanded the municipality to regularly supervise the new company’s operations to ensure that the cleaning work is undertaken systematically and in a satisfactory manner. He also wanted the municipality to ensure that cleaning workers are regularly paid and their interests protected or else the workers will lose their interest in their work, which will negatively reflect on the cleanliness of the city.He attributed the poor quality of work by the last contractor to irregular payment of salaries and other labor related issues. source : Arabnews
