Flash flooding hits southern Queensland town

Flash flooding has inundated several businesses in the town of Roma in Australia's southern Queensland, local media reported on Thursday.Heavy rain caused flash flooding in Roma on Wednesday night, inundating at least three shops in the town center, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).Queensland State Emergency Service regional director Bob Bundy said the town was in clean-up mode."The floodwaters are receding in the Roma area," Bundy told the ABC."There was some inundation of some of the businesses in the main street but that was all sort of over and done with in a very short period."Meanwhile, the town of St. George, near Roma, is bracing for major flooding to hit some time across the weekend."The major flood level is six meters and we're predicting it to reach seven and a half meters next week," Bureau of Meteorology flood forecaster Jess Carey said.He said roads near the town area could be cut at that level.Flood warnings remain in place for Bungil Creek and the Balonne and Maranoa rivers in the Darling Downs district in southern Queensland, and for the Flinders River in north-west Queensland and the Weir River in south-east Queensland as authorities are continuing to monitor the flood levels in the areas.About 300 residents, near the town of Richmond in north-west Queensland isolated by floodwaters, have been told they might remain cut off for another few days before floodwaters recede.
