Fall storm slides over Oklahoma into Dixie

A storm system that pummeled parts of Oklahoma and Texas Saturday night was losing steam as it crossed into northern Mississippi, forecasters said. The National Weather Service said thunderstorms were likely around Oxford as the system rolled into Dixie. The situation was a little more dire overnight in the southern Plains where the fall storm picked up strength from a flow of warm, humid air from the south. The result, AccuWeather.com said, was a violent outbreak of wind, rain and large hail that crashed down on parts of Oklahoma. Lightning around Norman, Okla., delayed the start of the Oklahoma-Texas Tech football game, and emergency officials reported downed trees and power lines in several communities. The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City said the worst storm appeared to be in the Ada area where softball-sized hail was reported. A barn lost its roof near Beggs, Okla., and roof damage was reported in downtown Wolfe City, Texas.
