London - UPI
It's official -- Britain's winter is the wettest ever, surpassing all existing rainfall records with a month of winter yet to go, the country's Met Office says. Two months of ongoing storms and rainfall have created the wettest winter since record-keeping began in 1910, its figures show. The United Kingdom received 19.1 inches of rain between Dec. 1, 2013 and Feb. 19, surpassing the previous high figure of 19.01 in 1995, the office said. The total could increase even more, Met Office spokeswoman Laura Young told the BBC, as heavy rains could fall over next few days. The ongoing heavy rains of the winter have caused extensive flooding in many parts of the United Kingdom, affecting about 6,500 homes. Many areas were hit with rainfall of more than twice the seasonal average, and the sheer size of the regions affected was unexpected, the Met Office said.
