Novak Djokovic
Madrid - XINHUA

Novak Djokovic assured his place in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament on Wednesday with a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over Croatian Borna Coric.

Djorkovic will play Spanish number 15 seed, Roberto Bautista Agut, who needed three sets to dispose of big serving Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in a game lasting two hours and 27 minutes.

Number six seed Kei Nishikori is also into the last 16 after another long match in which he finally defeated Fabio Fognini 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, but number four seed Stan Wawrinka suffered a surprise defeat 7-6(7), 7-6(2) to Nick Kygrios.

The surprises continue in the women's tournament with defending champions, Petra Kvitkova losing 6-3, 6-4 to Australian Daria Gavrilova, while number four seed Viktoria Azarenka was forced to retire through injury from her match against Louisa Chirico.

That leaves number 6 seed, Simone Haleb as the highest seeded player left in the tournament following her 6-3, 6-4 win over Timea Bacinszky, and she will have seen how number 8 seed Carla Suarez also crashed out after losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Australia's Samantha Stosur.
