London - Arab Today

Former England captain Alec Stewart is to take charge at Surrey, after his former club said on Monday that Chris Adams and Ian Salisbury were to leave following a disappointing start to the season. "Team director Chris Adams and first team coach Ian Salisbury have been stood down from their responsibilities at Surrey CCC with immediate effect," the club said on their official website kiaoval.com. Stewart, currently an executive director at Surrey, and bowling coach Stuart Barnes will be in charge for Surrey's next fixture against Yorkshire on June 21. Third-bottom Surrey are still seeking their first win of the season in the County Championship. Surrey chief executive Richard Gould said: "Chris and Ian have worked really hard for the club and we appreciate their endeavours during the past five seasons. "The club has decided it is now time to make a change in order to progress further." Adams, 43, was a right-hand batsman with Derbyshire and Sussex and played five Test and five one-day internationals for England before moving into management. Despite a rash of big-name signings, including Graeme Smith and Ricky Pointing, the club has won only the CB40 trophy in 2011. Salisbury, also 43, was a leg-spinner for Sussex, Surrey and Warwickshire and played in 15 Tests for England. Wicket-keeper-batsman Stewart, son of former England coach Mickey, played a record 133 Tests for England and in 170 one-day internationals. Now 50, he has been involved in some coaching, as well as an ambassadorial role for Surrey. From: AFP
