Crystal Palace splashed out a club record fee to sign Scotland midfielder James McArthur from Wigan Athletic on Monday. Palace boss Neil Warnock paid a reported £7m to land McArthur as he bolstered his squad for the expected fight against relegation before the transfer window closed until January.
The 26-year-old had been set to join Leicester City but that move collapsed when the Foxes signed veteran Argentinian Esteban Cambiasso instead, opening the way for Palace to surpass their previous record fee of £6m for Peterborough striker Dwight Gayle.
McArthur started his career at Hamilton before moving south of the border to join Wigan, where he played in their shock FA Cup final win against Manchester City in 2013. The Latics were relegated the same season and McArthur remained at the club as they failed to achieve an immediate top-flight return.
"Thanks to @LaticsOfficial for an amazing 4 years. They will always have a place in my heart but time for new chapter with crystal palace," he wrote on Twitter. Earlier in the day, Palace signed Tottenham Hotspur defender Zeki Fryers, 21, on a three-year contract for around £3m.
