Jermain Defoe scored the only goal as Toronto FC picked up their second successive win at the start of the MLS season against DC United. The former Tottenham striker has started his Major League Soccer career by scoring all three of his side's goals in their two games to date, bringing them alongside the Houston Dynamo and the Columbus Crew at the top of the Eastern Conference. Columbus beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 thanks to two first-half goals from Bernardo Anor, Leo Fernandes with the Union's consolation. Conference rivals Sporting Kansas City were also victorious, Dom Dwyer's penalty enough to secure a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. FC Dallas lead the way in the Western Conference at this early stage, with their 3-1 win over Chivas USA their second in three games. All the goals came in a lively final 20 minutes, starting when Fabian Castillo and then JeVaughn Watson gave Dallas a 2-0 lead. Erick Torres pulled one back but full-back Michel made the game safe for the hosts despite Hendry Thomas' late dismissal. The Colorado Rapids opened their win account for the season as penalties from from Vicente Sanchez and Deshorn Brown saw off the Portland Timbers 2-0. Portland keeper Donovan Ricketts was sent off for fouling Brown, allowing Sanchez to score from 12 yards in the 73rd minute, and replacement Andrew Weber took just two minutes to concede a second spot-kick which Brown converted. Colorado'sJose Mari was dismissed in stoppage time. Real Salt Lake remain unbeaten after a 1-1 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
