China sweeps Olympic badminton medals

China completed a sweep of the Olympic badminton gold medals Sunday, bringing an end to a tournament that created headlines for the wrong reasons. Lin Dan won the men's singles title and the men's doubles team of Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng also won a gold medal Sunday. The Chinese walked away with all five of the championships at stake in London, but they were also part of a scandal that struck at the heart of Olympic ideal that one should always try one's best. Eight participants in the women's doubles tournament, 25 percent of the field in that event, were kicked out of the Olympics for purposely trying to lose in group matches so as to arrange the quarterfinal pairings to their liking. Two of those expelled were China's Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, who made up the top-ranked women's doubles team in the world. The competition went on, however, and Lin eventually won his second straight Olympic gold medal with a 15-21, 21-10, 21-19 victory over Chong Wei Lee of Malaysia. Cai and Fu then completed the gold medal sweep with a 21-16, 21-15 triumph over Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark. It was the first men's doubles title at the Olympics for China since badminton became a part of the Games in 1992. The bronze medal in doubles went to Jae Sung Chung and Young Dae Lee of South Korea. China's Chen Long was the bronze medalist in the singles tournament.
