London - UPI
Katherine Copeland and Sophie Hosking, along with a foursome of male rowers, added to Britain's Olympic gold medal total Saturday. The British won their second and third rowing races of the Games and narrowly missed another victory. Copeland and Hosking won the lightweight double sculls event, leading from start to finish and holding off the Chinese team of Xu Dongxiang and Huang Wenyi. The pair from China finished fifth in the race at the 2008 Olympics. Prior to that event, the team of Alex Gregory, Pete Reed, Tom James and Andrew Triggs Hodge won the men's fours title. Reed, James and Triggs Hodge were part of the gold medal winning crew from Beijing. In the men's lightweight double sculls, Denmark's Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist edged Britain's Zack Purchase and Mark Hunter for the victory. The Danes, bronze medal winners four years ago, denied the British duo its second straight Olympic gold medal. The women's single sculls race was won in overwhelming fashion by Miroslava Knapkova of the Czech Republic. After finishing fifth in Beijing, she dominated the competition Saturday. Fie Udby Erichsen of Denmark finished second. With one day of rowing finals remaining in the Olympics, Britain has won eight medals overall.
