Nigeria - UPI
Nigerian police said they arrested three staff members of a radio station for a broadcast that may have led to the killing of workers giving polio vaccinations. Leadership Newspapers said Rabo Abdulkareem, a former director general of the Kano State censorship board, was also arrested. Wazobia-FM allegedly aired a story about Abdulkareem refusing to allow polio workers into his house. The staff also aired conflicting viewpoints on whether the polio vaccine was laced with chemicals that cause infertility and is, therefore, a way to reduce the population. In the wake of the program, nine healthcare workers were killed last week in two shootings, Leadership Newspapers reported. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Kano police told the BBC the journalists would be charged with culpable homicide. Nigeria is one of just three countries where polio is still endemic.
