Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa sent his condolences to the victims of a train crash in Spain which left four people dead on Friday.

The four people killed include the driver who was of Portuguese nationality. The accident took place when the train derailed in Porrino station in Pontevedra, Spain, on its way to Porto in neighboring Portugal.

"On finding out about this tragic train accident which took place this morning in the Spanish locality of Porrino, I want to transmit to the families of the mortal victims in name of the Portuguese and in my own name, our feelings of profound sorrow and our most heartfelt condolences," he said in a statement.

He added that he hoped those injured would recover soon. At least 49 people were injured in the accident, according to local media.

The train, which was operated by the Portuguese company CP and the Spanish company Renfe, departed from Vigo Friday morning. According to Renfe the train was carrying 64 passengers.
