Over 1,500 international entrants participate each year, placing French Polynesia firmly on the athletics map. As well as the main event, a challenging 42.195km track, Temae also holds a 21.100km semi marathon, 5km race, and family fun run, making the day accessible to runners of all abilities. The island of Moorea is a short sea plane ride from Tahiti and only 34 minutes by catamaran. In the days building up to the marathon, the local French Polynesians showcase their vibrant cultural traditions such as dance and art and craft workshops to the gathering tourists. Along the route of the run itself, traditional music is played to maintain a lively atmosphere and even tropical snacks are handed to the runners. The Moorea-Marathon is a great chance for tourists and locals to join together in a festival spirit. The natural landscape which makes up Tahiti and her islands is a tranquil haven of mountainous terrain, white sands and turquoise lagoons, perfect for distraction on the last kilometre.
