Nearly 70 were killed on Turkey’s roads during the four-day public holiday at the end of Ramadan, according to police figures on Sunday.

Eid al-Fitr, the celebration at the end of the month-long Muslim fast, sees hundreds of thousands of people flood the nation’s highways to spend the holiday with their families or head to the coast.

The annual break, which ran from Thursday to Sunday, is often marred by a leap in the number of deadly road accidents despite warnings from authorities about reckless driving.

According to police across the country, 69 people died and another 386 were injured over the four days.

In one incident on Saturday, five members of the same family died in a road accident in Eskisehir province, central Turkey.

On Thursday, the eve of Eid, 24 people were killed on the country’s road network.
