Islamabad - Arab Today

A suicide bombing killed at least 16 people at a mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan's Mohmand tribal area near the Afghan border.

About two dozen others were injured in the attack for which no group has yet claimed responsibility. The Mohmand area is known to have bases for the Taliban and other militant groups.

Naveed Akbar, the assistant administrator in the area of the attack, predicted the death toll could rise. More than two dozen people were reported wounded, and Akbar said many had serious injuries.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the tribal areas are strongholds of various militant groups that include one faction blamed for recent assaults in the area.
