Houston - XINHUA

A single-engine plane crashed on a nuclear lab property in the U.S. state of New Mexico on Sunday, leaving at least one dead, local media reported. The crash occurred in the morning on a property of Los Alamos National Laboratory in east New Mexico, the Los Alamos Monitor reported. The crash site is one mile away from a local airport. Authorities found one person dead in the crash, and it remained unknown if there were other passengers on the plane, said the report, adding that officials also did not know whether the plane was taking off or landing. Authorities confirmed the site is on the lab property. Los Alamos National Laboratory has not made any statement or comment on the crash. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) later published a statement saying the plane was a single-engine Aviat Husky. The FAA did not release the identity of the victim. The cause of the crash remained unknown. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board will reportedly be in charge of the investigation. Los Alamos National Laboratory is one of two laboratories in the United States where classified work on the design of nuclear weapons is undertaken. The other, since 1952, is Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
