Sex crime suspect not extradited

The Los Angeles County district attorney declined to seek extradition of a substitute teacher wanted for sex crimes who escaped to Mexico, records show. George Hernandez was arrested in September 2010 on charges of allegedly exposing himself to a young girl outside of a middle school. Upon searching his home, investigators found a 14-minute video of him molesting a 7-year-old student in a classroom in 2008. Hernandez was released on $30,000 bail and fled to Jalisco, Mexico. After the bail bonds company that posted his bail found him Jan. 19, 2011, and notified authorities in Los Angeles, they heard nothing for almost three months, the Los Angeles Times reported. Then, March 15, Deputy District Attorney Ann Huntsman responded, saying Hernandez was not to be extradited. "We have evaluated the case and have determined that we will not seek the defendant's international extradition from Mexico on this case at this time," she wrote. The case remains open, and Hernandez could still be prosecuted. Prosecutors said they did not feel they could convict him for child molestation due to insufficient evidence; however, the district attorney's office said they were never shown the video of Hernandez allegedly molesting the student.
