The United Nations Security Council extended for one year the task of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) which includes about 23 thousand soldiers and about four thousand civilian personnel. This came in a resolution the Council took last night following a discussion held on the situation in Darfur region. It is noteworthy that UNAMID is assigned to protect the civilian population, prevent attacks and support the implementation of the Darfur peace agreement. UNAMID mission also includes the provision of humanitarian assistance to the population and contribution to the reconstruction process.
