Washington - Upi

DRC opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi called on the Congolese people to reject the authority of "adventurists" after rejecting the election outcome. "I'm calling on you to only obey the legitimate authority voted in by the people, not individual adventurists who will have to answer before the Congolese and international judiciaries," he was quoted by the BBC as saying. Incumbent President Joseph Kabila is to be sworn in for a second term in office Tuesday. The country's supreme court confirmed results from November elections that indicated Kabul won 49 percent of the vote compared with 32 percent for Tshisekedi. Tshisekedi rejects the outcome and scheduled his own inauguration for Friday. November elections were the second since the Democratic Republic of the Congo become an independent nation in 1960 and the first since the 2003 end of a civil war that left an estimated 4 million people dead. The African Union said there were some problems at the polls but described the election as largely successful. The Carter Center, an organization with headquarters in Atlanta that had observers in the country, said there were serious problems with the election. The U.S. State Department called for a review of the irregularities.
