Islamabad - KUNA

The death toll of floods caused by monsoon rains in Pakistan have raised to 58 and affected thousands of families with threats of more rains to follow. According to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) official, Brigadier Mirza Kamran Zia, "At least 58 people have died, more than 30 others were injured and 66,000 were affected by rain and flooding in Pakistan since July 31." He added that floods were receding and people were returning to their homes, but he warned that more rain than usual was expected this month and next. Flash floods struck all provinces of Pakistan causing damages to properties and affecting large numbers of people. The economic hub of Pakistan, Karachi city, has been paralysed due to heavy rains followed by flash floods leaving twenty people dead. The administrative authorities in the city said that it would take more than two days to clear up, as rains flooded markets, buildings and houses in addition to blocking roads. Moreover, four children died of electricution as they were playing in rainwater in Junejo colony of southern Pakistani city, Hyderabad, when an electric wire fell in the water. The Chief Minister of Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif, announced USD 0.5 million for flood affected people of the Rajanpur district after taking an aerial view of the areas hit by floods. He said,"The Punjab government will not abandon those affected at such critical times." The monsoon rains cause floods in Pakistan every year, the country had suffered worst floods in 2010 killing over 1700 people affecting more than 20 million people.
