Manama - Arabstoday

A Kuwaiti groom had to spend his wedding night in a police station cell after relatives and friends beat up a neighbour. The partygoers were firing in the air in traditional wedding celebrations when the neighbour complained about the noise they were making and reprimanded them about breaking the law that banned celebrating marriages "under fire". However, the partygoers, infuriated by his remarks, insulted him before they beat him up, local Arabic daily Al Rai reported on Monday. The neighbour who had to be treated at a local hospital complained to the police, but when officers went to the wedding party, the relatives and friends ran away, promoting the head of Al Jahra security to order the arrest of the groom to force him to reveal the aggressors' identities. Pressure by several people on the police failed to secure the release of the groom who had to spend the night in the cell, the daily said. Online reactions varied from criticizing the police chief for "taking the groom as a hostage for something he did not do" to praising him for "taking a bold action to help curb the phenomenon of firing in the air to show off joy."
