Seoul - AFP

A fireman who died while trying to rescue a cat has sparked an outpouring of sympathy among South Koreans, with many demanding he should be laid to rest in the national cemetery. Kim Jong-Hyeon, 29, fell to his death while trying to save a cat trapped in a building in the northeastern city of Sokcho last week. By law, firefighters who perish while fighting a fire or rescuing humans can be buried in the national cemetery. Kim's case falls into a legal grey area because he was saving a pet. Internet users have said Kim warrants a national cemetery burial because he died in the line of duty while responding to a citizen's call. An animal rights group has launched a petition. Another group raised 1.6 million won ($1,500) and delivered it to Kim's pregnant wife, expressing "thanks for the sake of animals who can't speak".
