Colombian police reported Wednesday that two policemen were killed in an ambush conducted by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the western Huila department.
The police vehicle in which the officer and the patrolman were traveling was attacked with rifle shots. They died shortly after they were taken to a local hospital, the Colombian police said in a statement.
"The National Police and National Army are searching for those responsible for this cowardly act," the police said. They also said that rebels of the FARC's 17th Rigoberto Lozada Column were to blame.
Meanwhile, a FARC spokesman in Cuba confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that the guerrilla group will intensify its attacks on members of the public forces after the ceasefire that was established in December last year was lifted.
The Colombian government and the FARC have initiated a peace process over two and a half years ago, seeking to end the internal 60-year-long armed conflict.
