Wellington - Xinhua

The remains of a body found off the north of New Zealand's North Island last month are almost certainly those of Chinese student Yue Gui, New Zealand police said Thursday. The remains were found in the waters off Goat Island near where Gui, also known as Alice Gui, was last seen at the Auckland University Marine Reserve Faculty at Leigh, about 80 km north of Auckland, on June 4. Forensic scientists has completed a DNA analysis of the remains, which were suspected to be those of Gui, said a police statement. The 30-year-old doctoral student was believed to be checking water temperatures and was swept into the sea. Recreational divers discovered the remains after an extensive search by police and other emergency services. "The file has been referred to the coroner who will make a final determination on the circumstances that resulted in the death of Alice Gui," said the statement. "The parents of the deceased have been notified of the DNA results. They have expressed their gratitude to all agencies and persons who have assisted them towards achieving closure over their tragic loss." Gui's parents came out to New Zealand from Beijing for two weeks in June after she disappeared.
