Geneva - XINHUA

An outbreak of yellow fever in Sudan has killed 110 people as of Tuesday, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday. In total, 374 suspected cases of yellow fever have been reported, in which most are in Central Darfur, said WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic. From the blood samples obtained, 11 were positive for yellow fever when tested at the Central Public Health Laboratory in Khartoum, and WHO's regional laboratory in Senegal further confirmed two positive samples. Jasarevic said his agency has approved the release of vaccines from stockpile for a reactive mass vaccination campaign and 2.4 million doses of vaccine are expected to arrive in the country. Furthermore, WHO and the Federal Ministry of Health in Sudan have been training doctors, medical assistants and nurses on yellow fever case definition and management in North Darfur.
