Bujumbura - XINHUA

One of the organizers of Burundi's protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza's third-term bid has been injured by two bullets from unknown gunmen, his relative said.

Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, chairman of the Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Detainees' Rights, was shot by gunmen on a motorcycle on Monday evening when he was in his car returning home in the capital Bujumbura, the relative told Xinhua.

He is now receiving treatment in hospital.

During the protests that mainly took place in Bujumbura from late April to June, Mbonimpa's civil society group claimed that at least 80 people were killed in clashes between protesters and police.

Nkurunziza won re-election in a controversial presidential poll late July despite doubts over the election's credibility at home and abroad.

On Sunday, Burundi's former intelligence chief Adolphe Nshimirimana was killed in an ambush, sparking fears over post-election violence.
