At least seven people were killed by landslides in Sri Lanka Friday, as the number displaced by the week's flooding exceeded 800,000, dpa quoted an official as saying.
The latest fatalities were in the Badulla district, 220 kilometres east of the capital, and brought the death toll from the flooding to 11 since last Saturday, Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera told dpa.
He said there were unconfirmed reports of another 10 people missing after five houses were buried in a landslide.
'I am heading to the area to get a personal assessment,' he said.
Only 80,000 of those displaced have been moved into camps or temporary shelters provided by the government. The rest are with friends or relatives, according to officials in the affected areas.
Heavy rains has hit most of the country since Saturday, forcing irrigation officials to open the sluice gates of more than 40 tanks and reservoirs.
