A shooting took place at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, leaving four people dead along with 16 injured, according TO the army base commanding general Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley. The shooting began late Wednesday leaving the premises on lockdown into the night. Authorities do not believe the incident was terrorism related. The Washington Post reported that the gunman appeared to have taken his own life and was identified as 33 year old Army Specialist Ivan Lopez. Fort Hood was the location of a previous shooting in 2009 when 13 were killed and 32 were wounded by US Army Maj. Nidal Hasan who had become a radical Muslim during his time in the military. President Barack Obama said, from a fundraiser in Chicago, "We''''re heartbroken that something like this might have happened again. And I don''''t want to comment on the facts until I know exactly what has happened, but for now, I would just hope that everybody across the country is keeping the families and the community at Fort Hood in our thoughts and in our prayers." "My national security team is in close contact with not just the Defense Department but the FBI. They are working with folks on the ground to determine exactly what happened to make sure that everybody is secure," Obama added. In a statement, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said, "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. And my sympathies go out to this strong and resilient community, which has experienced this kind of senseless violence all too recently." "There is nothing more important to us as an institution than the safety and well-being of our people, and for that reason I am grateful to all the first responders who rushed to the scene," Hagel noted. Obama had stressed, "I want to just assure all of us that we''''re going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."
