Two police officers were killed in a bomb attack on a police headquarters in southeastern Turkey on Sunday, Gaziantep Governor Ali Yerlikaya confirmed.

At least 18 police and four civilians were injured in the suspected car bomb attack that was carried out in front of the police headquarters in the province of Gaziantep, local Daily News quoted Yerlikaya as saying.

Two cars entered the area in front of the headquarters and started firing with automatic weapons, said report.

One of the cars managed to escape, while the second car exploded, said report, adding that the police have begun a search to apprehend the other car involved in the attack.

The wounded were taken to a hospital, where one police officer succumbed to his injuries, said the report.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the investigations into the bomb attack are ongoing.

"We've reached significant information, but the Interior Ministry will make the necessary statement in due course," Davutoglu said.

Meanwhile, Gaziantep's International Workers' Day celebrations were canceled after the bomb attack.

The security situation in Turkey has deteriorated in recent months as a string of bombing attacks have hit Istanbul and Ankara, causing heavy casualties.
