2 PKK rebels killed in southeastern Turkey

Two rebels of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) were killed in a raid by the Turkish police in Turkey's southeastern province on Saturday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported. PKK members ignored calls to surrender and threw hand grenades at police surrounding their hideout in the province of Diyarbakir, province governor Mustafa Toprak was quoted as saying. The PKK members died after they jumped out of the building during the raid and one police officer was slightly injured, Toprak added. Listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, the PKK took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. More than 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK during the past over two decades.
