Eleven people were killed when an earthquake, measuring 5.7, struck northwest Tanzania on Saturday.

Additionally, more than 100 people were injured in the quake, which hit the Kagera region on the western shore of Lake Victoria, regional police commander Augustine Ollomi said.

The quake struck at 1227 GMT, 43 km (27 miles) from Bukoba, a city on the western shore of Lake Victoria, at a depth of 10 km, the US Geological Survey said.

It added that there is a low likelihood of casualties and damage from the quake in the Lake Victoria region, whose tremors were felt as far as western Kenya and parts of Uganda, which share the lake. Tremors were also felt in Kigali, Rwanda.
